New Haven Register: Shelton Tour Promotes Farm-to-Table

By Patricia Villers, Register Staff

SHELTON — Preparing meals with locally grown food was the theme Tuesday at Jones Family Farms & Winery.

Owners Terry and Jean Jones and their son hosted about 20 chefs and fellow farmers on their White Hills property.

Terry Jones welcomed the group gathered in The Harvest Kitchen cooking studio. He introduced his son, winemaker Jamie Jones, and Allyson Angelini, assistant director of The Harvest Kitchen.

They offered a mini-tour, which included a walk through an educational vegetable garden and a small section of vineyard.

Angelini said the mission of The Harvest Kitchen “is farm-to-table cooking.” The second season of classes is now under way. Angelini, chef Sherry Swanson and Jean Jones teach the classes.

“Our farm is based around direct marketing,” Angelini said.

The Jones family sells strawberries, blueberries, pumpkins and Christmas trees.

The farm has more than 200 acres of evergreens and more than 50 varieties of pumpkins and squash, Angelini said.

After the tour, guests tasted some of the wines, and Jamie Jones talked about the different varietals.

On Tuesday, the farm announced that Connecticut Magazine has named Jones Winery the recipient of 2010’s “Best Connecticut Wine” in its September issue.
