Jones Winery Named CT's Best Wine

Connecticut Magazine has named Jones Winery as the recipient of 2010’s “Best Wine” in its September issue.

After only six years of production, the Jones Winery is making the best wine in Connecticut. “It is quite an honor for us to be recognized for this award,” said Jamie Jones owner and winemaker at the Jones Winery. “It is our philosophy that the wine is made in the vineyard and all of our hard work in the vineyard is being reflected in our wines.”

Jones believes that the local growing conditions in the White Hills section of Shelton make the grapes special - the soil, the climate, and the amount of sunshine. As farmers, the Jones family takes enormous pride in bringing out the best in all their crops and that shows in the grapes as well. Jamie works with winemaker, Larry McCulloch, who says “My job in the winery is not to get in the way of what is grown in the vineyard.”

The Jones Winery is truly a Connecticut winery as it strives to grow as much of its fruit for wine as possible and also works with other outstanding growers in the state that share the same philosophy as the Jones family. Approximately 75% of the fruit used in Jones Wine comes directly from the Jones Family Farm and other state farms. Jones works with Hopkins Vineyard in New Preston, Sunset Meadow Vineyard in Goshen, Rockwall Vineyard in East Haddam, Beardsley Orchards in Shelton, Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford and Maple Lane Farm in Preston, all farmers who share a mutual pride in working the land to perfection.

To celebrate, the Jones Family Farms and Winery is finalizing details on the “Best of Connecticut” weekend on September 25th and 26th at the Jones Winery. Shelton winners for “Best Soup” Liquid Lunch and “Best Cheesecake” Stockbridge Cheesecake will be part of the festivities.

Visitors enjoy wine tastings at Jones Winery in the beautifully renovated dairy barn on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am – 5pm. For more information call 203-929-8425 or visit www.JonesFamilyFarms.com. Connecticut Magazine’s 2010 Best of Connecticut edition is on newsstands this September.

Be Good to the Land and the Land will be Good to You.
