Early Summer Weather Has Strawberries Ripe With Flavor!

Jones Family Farms, in the White Hills of Shelton, CT, is happy to announce that Strawberry Season in Connecticut has arrived! The Jones’ strawberry fields at their Valley Farm and Pumpkinseed Hill Farm are ready and pickers have been filling boxes with big red beautiful strawberries all week.

The coolness of May kept the strawberries right on their normal timeline of mid-June, but the recent warm sunny days have really made the red fruit ‘pop’. Terry Jones, who has been growing strawberries for over 40 years on the family farm, says; “The fields with red strawberries showing through the greens leaves are so beautiful. I hope people can get here to pick them before they’re gone. I’ve been sampling the past few days and they are juicy and delicious. They are one of the tastiest fruits and so good for you.”

Strawberries are packed with phenols. Phenols serve as potent antioxidants that have been shown to help protect cell make-up in the body and help prevent oxygen damage in every one of the body's organ systems. The phenol content – unique to the strawberry – helps protect the heart, fight off cancer, and act as an anti-inflammatory, all in one little berry.

Unlike the sturdy pumpkins in October and Christmas trees in December, the strawberry harvest window is difficult to predict. “The fruit is very fragile and acts very specifically to the weather,” says Jamie Jones, 6th generation farmer. “Once it is warm enough and they ripen, they need to be picked. The harvest time only lasts a few weeks and then it’s back into waiting mode for next year. Our friends who visit won’t want to miss out.”

Coming to a local farm to harvest your own berries can help brighten anyone’s day. Spending a few hours with friends or family on a Connecticut farm can make the troubles of the daily grind just wash away. Many visitors will come out and spend a serene time, basking in the warm June sun and taking in the beauty of the land.

Guests to the Jones Family Farms will walk away with a health kick, a calm mind and even some tried and true Jones strawberry recipe ideas. Always looking for ways to recycle and reuse on the farm, any guests who bring back their Jones Family Farms berry boxes and refill them, with at least eight pounds of berries, will receive a $1.00 credit off their purchase. Fun is had during rides on the famous Very Merry Berry Ferry as it takes pickers out to the fields. On weekends the Jones Winery is open for tastings and wine sales, even for wine by the glass on the beautiful winery patio and soon, summer vegetables will be sold at the picking fields as well.

Jones Family Farms is located in Shelton, Connecticut, off Route 110 - 5 miles North of Shelton Center and 2 miles south of the junction of Route 110 and 111 in Monroe.
