Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We are excited to welcome your child’s class to our farm! Jones Family Farms is a 400-acre farm nestled in the White Hills of Shelton, Connecticut. The Jones family sells their crops “harvest-your-own” style. The farm grows all of its pumpkins, as well as dozens of unique winter squashes.
During their visit, your child will enjoy a hay wagon tour of our fields to see the growing crops and landmarks of a classic New England farm. At the field classroom on Pumpkinseed Hill our farm educator will talk about growing crops, providing a unique experience for each grade level. Each child will then have the opportunity to harvest their own pumpkin.
As weather can change very quickly in New England, we recommend that children prepare for their visit by dressing like a farmer! Here are some suggestions:
- Dress in layers. Pack a sweatshirt or light jacket even if it will be a warm day. It can be windy on the farm at times, especially since it is on a hilltop! Hats and warm jackets are recommended on cooler days.
- Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes or boots with a tread on the bottom. We will be walking through fields, and the ground can be damp especially in the morning.
- Wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty. Wearing long pants or jeans is recommended. If there is rain in the forecast, wear a jacket, hat and shoes that will keep you dry. The fields can be damp, especially during the early morning programs.
- Watch the weather forecast. In drizzle and misting conditions we try to do as much of the program outside, especially the hayride and pumpkin harvest. Boots and a water resistant jacket with a hood are recommended. In very rainy conditions, the program moves inside to our barn but rain gear is still recommended.
We appreciate your assistance in preparing your child for their day on the farm! We look forward to meeting your child’s class and sharing with them the sights and sounds of a working farm during the fall harvest.
